If you are buying a dog seat cover, one question stands between you and the checkout button: will it actually fit your car?
Most brands answer with "universal fit," which is not an answer. Rear benches vary by more than a foot across common vehicles. A cover that is too wide bunches against the doors; one that is too narrow leaves your upholstery exposed exactly where muddy paws land. Here is how to know in about a minute.
The three things that actually decide fit
1. Rear bench width
This is the number that matters most. Measure the seating surface of your back seat from door card to door card, not the gap between the doors themselves. Most covers are built for a bench somewhere between 48 and 54 inches.
2. Headrests, front and rear
Nearly every strap-mounted cover anchors to headrests. If your rear headrests are fixed low, moulded into the seat, or absent entirely, the cover has nothing to hang from. Check both rows before you order.
3. Rear footwell depth
This only matters for hard-bottom covers, which bridge the footwell to create a flat platform. If your rear footwell is unusually deep or shallow, the platform sits at a different height relative to the seat. Most sedans, SUVs and trucks are within normal range.
How to measure in 60 seconds
- Open a rear door and lay a tape measure across the seat cushion, door to door. Write the number down.
- Measure from the back of the seat cushion forward to the front edge. That is your seat depth.
- Check that both front and rear seats have headrests you can loop a strap around.

If your vehicle is not listed, measure. The number tells you more than a model name does, because trim levels and seat options change rear bench width within the same model.
When a hard-bottom cover will not fit
- No rear headrests. Nothing to anchor the rear straps to.
- A bench narrower than about 48 inches, common in older compacts and two-door coupes.
- Custom or aftermarket rear seating: bucket seats, removed benches, roll cages.
- Third-row seating you need to keep usable. The platform covers the second row.
A note on honesty about fit
Plenty of covers in this category are sold as fitting nearly every car. They do not. We would rather you measure first and buy once than order on a promise and start a return.

Can a passenger still sit in the back?
Yes. One side folds down to expose a rear seat while the other stays protected.
Will the rear seatbelts still work?
Yes. Built-in buckle openings keep the belts accessible with the cover installed.
What if my dog is large, or there are two of them?
The reinforced PP platform is rated to 440 lb, so combined weight is rarely the constraint. Floor area usually is. Measure the bench and picture both dogs lying down on it.
